Activities Galore! Stephanie Harvey, TAR/Teachers’ Choice, and the ORAcle

pumpkins-300x200Opportunities galore to learn from and interact with other educators coming soon.

It’s not too late to join the TAR/Teachers’ Choice group that meets this month on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 4:30 at the home of Kim Fairbanks, 2189 Kenworthy Rd. NE, Albany. This year our Teachers as Readers Group is combining with the ILA Teachers’ Choice program to read many new picture and chapter books. There is a $25 fee for taking part in this activity, but each person taking part in the book reviews will receive a “ton” of books at the end of the program next Spring. A very nominal fee to see and read many new books and to be able to place them in your classroom/school!  Questions? Please email Kim: kimjerry1@comcast.net.

If you missed Stephanie Harvey when she was in Oregon during our snow storm several years ago, you have an opportunity coming up on November 4, 2016. Stephanie will be speaking at the Holiday Inn Hotel, 8439 NE Columbia BLVD in Portland. Stephanie is a nationally well-known educator who is the author of Strategies that Work and Comprehension Collaboration- Inquiry Circles in Action. Her talk at ORA’s Fall Institute is entitled Reading is Thinking: Comprehension at the Core. For more information about her presentation and to register for the institute, please go to oregonread.org. You may want to read the printed application first as it has the information regarding the talk, even if you choose to register online.

Have you read the latest issue of the ORAcle? If not, you will want to visit Oregon Reading Association’s website to find many articles about topics that are sure to be interesting to you, no matter what area of education you are in. This issue has information about books for teaching about the election, sharing culturally responsive material with young children, using the What Works Clearinghouse, information about ORA’s fall and winter institutes, and Patricia Gallagher book awards. Rene Dernbach and her fine columnists do a great job of bringing you a very informative newsletter 3 times per year. http://oregonread.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/ORAcle-Fall-2016_L.pdf
